Obituary – Larry Dean Steiner

Jan. 7, 1945 ~ Aug. 8, 2024

Larry Steiner, beloved husband, father, granddad, and great-granddad, died peacefully at home in Crescent City, California, at the age of 79, following a year of medical challenges.

Born in Scott City, Kansas, on Jan. 7, 1945, to Olden O. and Myrtle I. (Buhler) Steiner, Larry’s family eventually settled in Arkansas City, Kansas, where he attended school, graduating in 1963. On Sept. 17, 1962, Larry married his childhood sweetheart, Cheryl Wood. Deeply in love and inseparable, they sought out new adventures and enjoyed a long and happy life together.

Larry’s father instilled a strong work ethic in him at a young age. By 11, Larry was working and contributing part of his earnings to his mother for laundry. Known for his passion for cars, Larry purchased his first vehicle, a two-tone Twilight Turquoise and Ivory 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air, three months before getting his driver’s license. He worked at Vega Gold Dairy during high school and later embarked on a banking career as a loan officer in Wichita, Kansas.

On Dec. 31, 1976, Larry, Cheryl, and their two sons, Gary and Jason, moved to Meeker, Colorado, where they enjoyed hunting and fishing in Rio Blanco County. Over the next 43 years in Colorado, Larry owned and operated several businesses, including Steiner Carpet Service, Indian Valley Outfitters, Prospector Apartment Complex, Larry’s Bail Bonds, Valley Grocery, Steiner Insurance Agency, Keystone Realty, Stage Stop Convenience Store, Stage Stop Auto Dealership, and a state-of-the-art Stage Stop Drive-Thru Car Wash and Detail. Larry also purchased and remodeled the Stage Coach Steakhouse, which tragically burned down. He was known for his commitment to ethical and honest business practices.

After being diagnosed with COPD and struggling with breathing difficulties at high altitudes, Larry and Cheryl relocated in October 2020 to the Northern California/Southern Oregon coast near Redwood National Park.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Charles and Dale Steiner, and his sister JoAnn Walker. He is survived by his sisters Norma Wright of Arkansas City, Kansas, and G. Ruth Kittrell of Belchertown, Massachusetts; his beloved wife Cheryl of nearly 62 years; sons Gary (Lori) Steiner of Clinton, New York, and Jason Steiner of Parachute, Colorado; grandsons Roston (Courtney) Steiner of Meeker, Colorado, Cole (Courtney) Steiner of Castle Rock, Colorado, and Treyton Steiner of Clinton, New York; and great-grandson Hayden Von Steiner of Meeker, Colorado.

Per Larry’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. He was loved and respected by all who knew him.
