Richard Edwin Burdick
Jan. 21, 1939 ~ Feb. 11, 2023
Richard Edwin Burdick was a devout husband, father, grandfather and friend who blessed the world with his presence for 84 years, until his peaceful passing on Feb. 11, 2023.
Richard was born on Jan. 21, 1939, in Meeker, Colorado, and was the youngest son of six, born to Vernon Elmer and Ruth Enid Burdick. Growing up in Meeker provided him a lifetime of friends, memories and love. It was there that he met the love of his life and wife of 63 years, Betty Marie Mitchel. The two quickly realized who they were meant to be to each other and were married in their hometown in 1959. The pair then moved to Ventura, California, to join Richard’s family and to start and raise their own. Over the years, Meeker remained close to both of their hearts. They returned often to visit family and friends, show their own family their history, attend the sheepdog trials, the Class of 1957 reunions and Fourth of July celebrations.
Richard was an extremely hard working man and a proud provider for his family. He started his career on Ventura Avenue working at a gas station where he made a few extra dollars polishing the chrome on the semi-trucks. His dedication to his work did not go unnoticed, as he was soon recruited by the electrical contracting company across the street, where he was able to hone in on the skills that would eventually lead to his success as a businessman and entrepreneur. In tandem with working full time, he attended Ventura Junior College where he studied sociology. In the end, a decision as to whether to finish his degree or focus on providing for his growing family had to be made. And as it always was, the decision was his family. In 1965 Richard was again recognized as a dedicated and talented man and was asked to join Delta Electric. After a few years, he became a partner and owner of the company and spent the next 30 years at Delta before retiring in 1995.
Richard (known to his friends as Dick) was an avid and renowned collector and expert of western historical antiques. In his retirement, this world became his passion as well as a prominent source of joy and light for him. His involvement in this community provided him with so much more than physical items. It provided him with years of experiences, stories, beauty, laughter and a true brotherhood that meant more to him than was often articulated, but always known. Richard was able to attend a collectors trade show the week before he passed, which undoubtedly brought him incredible happiness, one final time.
Richard is survived by his wife Betty, son Randy, daughter Tracy Larie, daughter-in-law Lynne, and grandchildren Hayley, Hannah and Kaden. His family is incredibly honored and proud that they got to call such a remarkable man their husband, father and grandfather.
A memorial celebrating Richard’s life will be held at the Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura, California, at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24.
