Roy Light

Roy Norman Light, age 99, of Meeker, Colorado, died at Colorado State Veterans Home in Rifle, Colorado, on Jan. 5, 2023.

Roy was born in Arcata, California on Dec. 26, 1923, to Harry and Annie Light. He was a descendant of the early Humboldt County pioneers.

Light attended school in Eureka, California, and graduated from Eureka High School in 1942. He was working at a shipyard in Richmond, California, when he was inducted into the U.S. Army as a member of the 150th Tank Destroyer Battalion in 1943. He was discharged in 1944 with a disability. He was a parts manager at the Studebaker and Mack Truck Dealer in Arcata, California, as well as with P.C. Sacchi Chevrolet and Buick Dealer. He was also a heavy equipment mechanic at Sierra Pacific Lumber Co. in Samoa, California, for many years. Later, he owned his own auto repair shop and storage units on Old Arcata Road at the Indianola Cutoff in Eureka, California.

Roy left the Eureka area in 1985 to take a job with Caltrans in Chester, California and became a resident of Loyalton in 1989 when he again went to work as a heavy equipment mechanic for Sierra Pacific Industries mill. When he went into semi-retirement, he became a night guard until the mill closed and was disassembled in 2001-2002. He and his wife, Lee, moved to Meeker, Colorado, in 2008.

Roy was a charter member of the reinstated Sons of the Golden West in Arcata from 1955-1985 and is a current member of the American Legion in Meeker, Colorado. He was an avid cribbage player, competing in many local tournaments. He also liked traveling, tinkering with anything mechanical, hunting, and spending time at the family property along the Mad River in Humboldt County California. Roy was an active volunteer in the Meeker community, which he loved.

He is survived by his wife Lee Light; son James M. Light of Maple Park, Illinois; daughter Norma Y. Husebye of Bonney Lake, Washington; three stepdaughters, Chrystene Sackett and Linda Divine of Meeker, Colorado, and Jonell Roady of Eureka, California; two stepsons, Elmer Hubbard of Ozark, Missouri and Grover Hubbard of Surprize, Arizona; two grandchildren; 26 step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. at Meeker United Methodist Church, 809 Park Ave. in Meeker, Colorado. Graveside services will be arranged at Greenwood Cemetery in Arcata, California, at a later date.

Memorials may be sent to the American Legion or VFW of Meeker, Colorado.
