July 3, 1940 ~ Aug. 12, 2024
Sarah “Sally” Louise Collins was born to John and Faye Russell on July 3, 1940, in Hayden, Colorado. The oldest of three siblings—Sally, Jake, and Susan—she grew up in Craig but cherished western Colorado through her family’s outdoor adventures. Sally loved camping, fishing, and her mother’s baking. She was active in Bluebirds, Girl Scouts, Future Homemakers of America, and pep club.
After graduating from Moffat County High School in 1958, she worked at the 101 Ranch (Rio Blanco Ranch), where she met Dick Collins. Sally attended beauty school in Grand Junction that fall, but Dick pursued her, and they married on May 10, 1959. The couple lived on ranches in South Fork and Aqua Caliente, Arizona, before returning to Piceance Creek, Colorado, in December 1959. Sally and Dick, known for their fiery personalities, shared a love for ranching, dancing, and raising their five children.
Sally had a strong work ethic, a deep appreciation for Native American artifacts, and a love for outdoor activities with her family. She was known for her talent with puzzles, cards, and bingo, as well as her infectious laugh and witty personality.
Sally passed away peacefully on Aug. 12, 2024, surrounded by her children. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Jake Russell, husband Dick Collins, and grandsons Rowdy Hall and Billy Hammer. She is survived by her sister Susan Winder; her children, Angie Collins (Hank Davis), Dale (Rod) Hall, Dallas (Susan) Collins, Candy (Jim) Baxter, and Fayanna (Mike) Seely; 22 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
