Obituary: Terry Dean Broughton

Oct. 1, 1944 ~ Feb. 3, 2026

Terry Dean Broughton, a Rifle, Colorado, native, was born Oct. 1, 1944, in Oakland, California, to Vernice Marva (Ammerman) Broughton and George Raymond Broughton. He was welcomed to the family by older sisters Jacqueline Broughton (Loesch) and Judy Broughton (Bainter). As the youngest child and the only boy, he was indulged and treasured. Terry attended Rifle area schools and graduated from Rifle Union High School in 1962. He died Feb. 3, 2026, in Rifle, Colorado, after a brief battle with cancer.

As a young man, Terry was a jockey, riding racehorses across Colorado, Utah and even into Arizona. He remained a horse-racing fan all his life.

In 1965 he married Donna (McGruder) Casey, and they had one daughter in 1966, Denneane Anne of Rifle. They later divorced. Donna and Terry corresponded throughout his time in Vietnam and remained close friends all their lives, spending many holidays and other occasions together.

The Vietnam War saw Terry drafted into the U.S. Army in February of 1969. He proudly served our country as a heavy equipment operator and was honorably discharged.

A lifelong storyteller, Terry was also a business owner. The Alley was a 3.2 (under 18 permitted) bar that Terry proudly owned, located on Railroad Avenue in Rifle. He had great stories about his friends and acquaintances and their hijinks in the local drinking establishments, as well as stories about taking his 12 “girlfriends” to the Ute Theater in Rifle when he was in the third grade.

He married Sherry (Burnside) Loschke in 1972; their union produced no children. They later divorced.

Terry married Toni (D’Onofrio) Jorgensen in 1981. Toni brought a daughter Tori Ericka to the marriage, and in 1982 they added another daughter, Fallen Renee. They later divorced.

Regina (Jones) Pretti was Terry’s fourth wife. They had one daughter, Shawnee Reign in 1991. They later divorced.

From 1991-92, Terry served as the Colorado Veterans of Foreign Wars All District Commander for District 14. During his tenure as the All District Commander, he visited Washington, D.C., and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. He also attended many Veterans Day ceremonies at the RE-2 schools throughout the years and was proud of having served our country.

Terry was an avid outdoorsman, relishing time spent up Beaver and Porcupine creeks, checking his trail cameras, being a steward of public trails, an advocate for water rights and recounting area history to all who would listen. He loved telling stories, recounting area history, hunting, horses, horse racing, rodeo, all outdoor activities and attending his children’s, grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s activities.

A 4-H leader in the 1990s and 2000s, Terry was always willing to step in and volunteer at horse and agricultural-related events. Even in his 80s, he was willing to run the gate at barrel races and set barrels when needed, proud to tell all spectators who his favorite competitors were.

Terry is survived by his daughters Denneane (Billy) Conn, Rifle, Colorado; Tori Broughton of Heber City, Utah; Fallen (Tovey) Hammond of Stockton, Utah; and Shawnee Broughton (Lora Whetham) of Parachute, Colorado; granddaughters C.J. Vondette and Devon (Craig) Spaulding of Silt, grandson Cooper Hammond of Stockton, Utah, and great-granddaughters Sloan and Spencer Spaulding of Silt. Also survived by his sisters Jacqueline Loesch and Judy (Bruce) Bainter as well as nephews Lanny Loesch and Greg Tracy and nieces Lorile Loesch, Tammy Wiliams, Renee Bahensky and Jaymie Tracy. He will be missed by countless friends, neighbors and relatives.
