Obituary: Theron Loyd Strickland

Theron Loyd Strickland

Dec. 10, 1949 ~ July 31, 2019

Theron Loyd Strickland passed away July 31, 2019, at Littleton Adventist Hospital, Littleton, Colorado.

Viewing was held Friday, Aug. 2 from 4-6 p.m. at Horan McConaty, 1091 South Colorado, Denver, Colorado.  Services were held Saturday, Aug. 3 at 10 a.m. at St. Andrews Methodist Church, 9203 South University Blvd. Highlands Ranch, Colorado.

He was born Dec. 10, 1949, in Morgan City, Louisiana, to Theron Strickland Sr. and Joetta Maxine Elms.  As a young boy, he moved with his family to Texas, Wyoming and Colorado where his family was employed in the oil fields.

The family moved to Meeker, Colorado, in 1966 and Theron graduated from Meeker High School in 1968. He attended Colorado State University where he graduated in 1972 with a degree in geology. He was employed in the petroleum business in Texas, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado for 10 years. He owned a travel agency in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, and was a licensed real estate agent, appraiser and general contractor. He was a member of St. Andrews Methodist Church and an active member of the choir for many years.

He married his high school sweetheart, Judy Buckles, Aug. 16, 1969. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this August.

Theron was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved nothing more than fishing the white river on the Buckles’ Ranch in Meeker and elk hunting in the White River Valley. He and Judy were world travelers, having visited many foreign countries. Highlighting his travels were a trip to Iceland, an Israel-Egypt trip led by Reverend Harvey Martz, and a safari to Africa. He loved snorkeling, golfing, skiing and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Judy; son Rob (Bridget) of Andover, Kansas; daughter BreeAnna Merrill (Justin) of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; grandchildren Quaid, Aubryn, Gunnar Strickland and Isabella and Zoe Merrill; his mother Maxine of Texas; sister-in-laws Linda Morgan (Stuart), Linda Bitter (James); brother-in-law David Buckles (Richelle); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his father, Theron Strickland, Sr.; infant son Matthew Strickland; brother Jimmy Paul Strickland; and father and mother-in-law, Robert and Odelle Buckles.

In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to your favorite charity with Theron’s name in the memo.
