RANGELY | It was a rough week for the Rangely cagers as the boys dropped games to Plateau Valley, Vail Christian and Olathe. Saturday at Plateau Valley, Austyn Vig led the Cowboys with 21 points, earning a 53-30 league win. Gabe Polley and Sydney Cole led the Panthers in scoring with 10 and eight points, respectively.
On Friday the Panthers lost 45-74 to the Vail Christian Saints, a constant resident of this year’s 2A boys’ top 10 poll. The Saints controlled the tip and proved worthy of their “top 10” billing, taking a 48-18 lead into halftime. Jamison Lee led the way for the Saints with 24 points, while Gabe Polley and Sydney Cole were the only Panthers in double digits with 12 and 11 points.
The Panthers took on the Olathe Pirates on Tuesday, falling 35-58. Dayton Sofka scored 13 of his 21 points in the second quarter. The Panthers, led by Sydney Cole’s 18 points, matched the Pirates in the first, third and fourth quarters.
“The boys have been improving against full-court pressure, but we relapsed in the second quarter against Olathe and it cost us,” said coach Kyle Boydstun. The Panthers overall record is now 1-2 in league play and 2-8 overall.
The Panthers JV team, mostly freshmen and sophomores, struggled against an older and bigger Plateau Valley team. However, the boys played much better, according to coach Colt Allred, compared to their game with the Cowboys on Dec. 20. The Saints JV claimed a 69-50 win over the Panthers JV, however, the Panthers defeated the Pirates’ JV 50-32.
The Rangely Panthers travel to Caprock Academy on Thursday, Jan. 23 and host the West Grand Mustangs on Friday, Jan. 24.
