RANGELY | This past weekend the Rangely High School track and field team had the privilege of staying home for the Rangely Panther Invitational. The team proved to be the masters of their own track, bringing home numerous personal bests, a few school and class records, and lots of medals.

In the throwing rings, senior Kenyon Cochrane led the way with two first place finishes. He won the discus with an impressive throw of 154 feet, 3 inches and took home the shot put gold with a toss of 41 feet, 2 inches. His younger brother, Chase Cochrane, also threw well. He threw the discus 109-06 and shot put 34-10.5. Malcom Osborn and Jaren Blankenship also threw both discus and shot put, with their discus throws going 83-04 and 67-06 and their shot put 29-00 and 27-05, respectively. Across the field and in the jumping pits, Fisher Winder was the Panthers’ top jumper when he leapt 18-07.75 for fourth place and was second in the triple jump with 37-06.5. Clay Allred went for 35-05.25 in the triple jump while Logan Peterson and Robert Murray jumped 17-11.5 and 16-04, respectively, in the long jump.

Annika Cantrell and Kastyn Dembowski finished fourth and fifth with their clearance of 4-05.5 in the high jump. Chloe Noel and Paytin Kendall each cleared 3-09.5.

Robert Murray, Logan Peterson and Jaren Blankenship each tested the speed of the track as they competed in the 100-meter, finishing with times of 12.86, 12.90, and 16.21, respectively. Clay Allred was the lone competitor in the 200-meter, finishing in 27.71.

Ashlynn Ducey was the lady Panthers’ top sprinter, claiming third in the 100-meter in 13.53 and second in the 200-meter in an impressive 27.41. MacKenzie Manchester was the only Rangely athlete to compete in a hurdle event, finishing the 100 in 21.59.

Several athletes had great performances in the 400-meter and 800-meter races. Clay Allred claimed fifth in the 400 with his time of 59.93. Joseph Valdez ran the one lap race in 1:00.98, Logan Peterson in 1:01.04, and Robert Murray 1:05.73. James Talbot ran the 800 in 2:03.87 to win the race. The boys’ 1,600-meter was one of the best races of the day as James Talbot and Andrew Dorris sped to the top two spots. The duo finished in 4:33.32 and 4:40.66, respectively. Gage Nielsen also ran a 6:42.47 and Matthew Morgan finished in 7:01.55. Nielsen and Morgan decided one mile wasn’t quite enough, so the two of them came back to race double the distance in the 3,200-meter. They finished fourth and fifth in 15:23.58 and 15:44.02, respectively.

Both the boys and girls put together some strong relays to compete as well. The boys 4×100-meter finished in third with a time of 47.23 and the girls ran 57.40. The boys 4×200-meter was second with a time of 1:45.12 and the girls finished fourth in 2:03.34. The final event of the day, the 4×400-meter saw the boys winning in 3:45.09 and the girls taking fourth in 4:35.95.

“Everyone did such a great job this weekend,” said coach Beth Scoggins. “People competed hard, cheered each other on, and helped to make the meet run as smoothly as possible. I can’t thank all of our volunteers and workers enough! It’s been such a fun season and I’m really excited to see what is in store for the final month.”

The Panthers will compete next at the Clint Wells Invitational in Craig next Friday, then double back for the Steamboat Springs Track and Field Invitational on Saturday in Steamboat Springs.
