Panthers compete at first track meet of season

RANGELY I The Rangely Panthers track and field team had its first meet on Friday, March 18, at the Rifle Invitational. This was the first time that Rifle has hosted a meet in three years and it was nice being back there. They have nice facilities and do a good job of hosting meets. This year there were 20 teams for the boys and 22 teams for the girls; the teams ranged in size from 5A to 1A. The Panthers had 20 athletes participate, they were missing a few since it was the end of their spring break, while some of the athletes were coming home from spring break and met the team in Rifle.

“I am very pleased with how all the athletes performed for the first meet of the year. It was exciting to see the girls placing seventh overall in such a big meet.” said Coach Beth Scoggins. The girls were led by Mary Scoggins in points as she won the long jump and helped the spring medley relay take first place. Scoggins, a senior, had a great meet. She broke the school record in the long jump with a jump of 17 feet 2.5 inches, which was held by Larrisa Hinamen since 2000. Scoggins also set a new class record in the mile with a time of 5:46.83. She also competed in the 800-meter run finishing in 2:39.46.

Other teammates that helped score individually for the girls were senior Hayley Burr, juniors Kyrah Phelps and Rylee Allred, sophomore Annika Cantrell and freshman Miah Wren. Burr placed sixth in the 100 hurdles (19.10) and then third in the 300 hurdles (52.36). Phelps placed eighth in shot (28’ 3”) and sixth in the discus (91’ 4”). Allred placed seventh in shot (28’9.75”) and  also threw discus for (82’ 3”). Cantrell placed third in high jump (4’ 10”) and ran the 200 (37.18). Wren placed eighth in the 400 (1:08.35) and ran the 200 (30.80).

Sophomore Macy Morgan had a great day of racing. She took 1:09 off her time in the mile (7:09.47) and had a great 800 (3:21.05). Sophomore Emma Smith ran the 100 (15.18) and long jumped (13’ 1.5”). Senior Brooke Filfred threw the shot (23’ 3.75”) and discus (71’8”). New to the team are sophomores Kastyn Dembowski, Ryann Mergelman and Laurie Ward. Dembowski ran the 100 (15.51), high jumped (4’ 4”) and long jumped (12’ 1.75”). Mergelman triple-jumped (26’ 8.5”) and ran the 200 (32.51) and 400 (1:21.12). Ward ran the 100 (18.64). The girls put two relays together: the sprint medley relay and the 4×200 relay. The sprint medley relay took first overall (2:01.44) Burr (100), Smith (100) Dembowski (200) and Scoggins (400). The 4×200 was made up of Wren, Ward, Mergelman, and Cantrell with a time of 2:12.52.

The boys didn’t score well as a team but they had some great performances with several new personal bests. Junior Kenyon Cochrane was the only one who scored for the boys. Cochrane threw discus for third place (139’ 10”) and shot (36’ 7.25”). Senior Timothy Scoggins did a variety of events: running, throwing and jumping. Scoggins ran the 400 (57.08) shot (36’ 1”) and high jumped (5’ 4”). Senior Joseph Adams , new to the team, threw the discus (53’ 1”) and ran the 800 (2:37.28). Junior Andrew Dorris high jumped (5’ 6”), ran the 1,600 (5:02.20) for a new personal best, and the 800 (2:10.13). Junior Kevin Wren triple jumped (32’ 1.75”), long jumped (15’ 7.25”) and ran the 200 (27.61) all three being a personal best. Junior Fisher Winder also triple jumped (35’ .25”) and long jumped (16’ 11”), both a new personal best. Freshmen Clay Allred and James Talbot had a great first high school meet. Allred long jumped (15’), triple jumped (31’ 6”) and ran the 400 (60.26). Talbot ran the 1,600 (5:46.05) and the 3,200 (12:17.67).

The boys also put together a 4×200 and a 4×400. Unfortunately, the 4×200 was disqualified. The 4×400 made up of Allred, Adams, Talbot and Dorris ran a 4:12.93.

The Panthers will be running this Saturday at the first North Fork Invitational held at Hotchkiss, Colorado. It will be a smaller meet but will have some good competition. “The Panthers have been known to compete very well at this track and I look forward to seeing what they will do this year at this track,” Scoggins said.
