Panthers fall to Dove Creek in ‘heartbreaker’

RANGELY | The Panthers went on their first road trip of the season to play the Dove Creek Bulldogs. We knew that it was going be a battle in order to get a win in Dove Creek. The Panther defense played great throughout the night. The game was low-scoring for 8-man football. For the offense it took a little bit for the Panthers to get going. We were plagued by penalties that ultimately stalled a lot of our drives. The score was 8-6 at halftime.

In the second half the defensive battle continued. The Panther special teams forced a turnover and we were able to capitalize on it and we scored a touchdown making the score 14-8. With a little over three minutes left in the game the Panthers were setup to punt the ball away and unfortunately Dove Creek blocked the punt and scored which put the score knotted up at 14 causing the game to go into overtime.

In overtime the Panthers selected defense first and were unable to keep the Bulldogs out of the endzone. The Bulldogs got the 2-point conversion, bringing the score to 22-14. The Panther offense didn’t panic and in two plays the team answered with a touchdown of its own. In a heartbreaker the team failed the 2-point conversion and fell short 22-20. The coaches are proud of the heart and effort that was displayed on Friday but the main focus for the upcoming week is to be more disciplined to alleviate the amount of penalties.
