On Dec. 9-10, Rangely High School hosted eight schools and used three gymnasiums to oversee a frenzy of early season tournament basketball. The 2022 Western Slope Winter Classic featured 23 varsity games and nine JV games over two days. The Rangely boys and girls both earned a spot in their respective championship matches. However, the Dove Creek girls took home the trophy with a 57-31 victory over the lady Panthers. On the boys side, Ouray outlasted the Panthers 54-52 as the “Cardiac Kids” of Rangely attempted a potential game winning three pointer that hit back iron and bounced out. The boys team almost completed their third straight come-from-behind victory after defeating both Nucla and North Park on Friday in similar fashion. The Rangely girls had gone 3-0 against North Park, Nucla and Dolores before giving the No. 6 state-ranked Class 1A lady Bulldogs their best game of the tournament. Before the championship rounds on Saturday, players competed in individual events. Steele Arnold of Nucla and Rylee Hickman of Dove Creek bested 23 other contestants to take home the boys and girls three-point awards. Scotty Vines of De Beque showed off his repertoire of dunks, but brought the house down with a reverse windmill dunk that earned him three perfect scores.
Rangely will host Meeker Saturday for Foundation Games beginning at 1 p.m. Now that Meeker is a 3A team and Rangely is still 2A, there are no regular season games scheduled between the county rivals. | KAYTE DENISON PHOTO
