RANGELY | The Rangely Panthers routed the host Olathe Pirates basketball team by a final score of 59-35 in Saturday’s league game. The first half tally looked nothing like the final score as Olathe kept pace with the Panthers and took the lead 25-24 going into half time. The Panthers seemed content to trade buckets with the Pirates early, but the third quarter provided a different look. The Panthers smothered the Pirates on defense and capitalized on steals and forced turnovers to outscore Olathe 18-0. “Once we took the lead, I thought we kept our intensity up on defense and our poise on offense to survive their final run,” Panther coach Kyle Boydstun said. Rangely held all Olathe scorers to single digits while being led by Andrew Dorris with 14 points, Keihlin Myers with 11, and Kevin Wren and Marstan Wagner with 10 points each. The Panther JV lost a heart-breaker to the Pirates 24-29.
In their next game, the Panthers face the Meeker Cowboys in a 2A/1A Western Slope game, on Thursday, Jan. 27. Rangely will attempt to move on its 6-5 season record and 4-2 league record. The Cowboys enter the game with a 7-3 record after their 57-30 league win over Soroco and sport a 3-1 record in league play.
Rangely will have a busy weekend as they also host Telluride on Friday (varsity games only at 5:30 and 7 p.m.) and then Plateau Valley on Saturday (game times are 1, 2:30 and 4 p.m.).
