The Rangely Panthers traveled again to Craig, Colorado, this past weekend to compete. This time, however, the Panthers lined up on the beautiful Yampa Valley Golf Course on a nice, fall afternoon. A smaller field of racers and a significantly flatter course allowed the Panthers to really enjoy their final regular season race.
The boys race got the afternoon going for the harriers of Steamboat Springs, Rangely, Moffat County, West Grand, and Soroco. James Talbot snagged his second individual victory of the season, winning decisively in 17:47. Andrew Dorris wasn’t far off, crossing the line in sixth with a time of 18:17. Kevin Wren ran a strong race and grabbed the 10th place position, his first top 10 finish.
Fisher Winder was next across the line for the Panthers, taking 14th in 20:49. Logan Peterson ran a personal best of 21:19 and claimed a spot in the top 20 as he finished 19th. Joseph Valdez came through next in 22:06, followed by Colton Stevens in 22:23, and Justin Allred in 22:42. Gage Nielsen and Matthew Morgan, who have been improving all season, rounded out the Panthers boys teams with times of 26:17 and 27:50, respectively.
Macy Morgan, once again the lone runner for the lady Panthers, had an incredible race around the golf course. Morgan cut yet another 80 seconds off of her previous best and claimed 16th place as she crossed the line in 24:10.
“This was a great meet for us,” said Coach Beth Scoggins. “We didn’t have our full team, as Anthony Dorris was sick, and yet we still finished second as a boys team and were only one point away from beating Steamboat. I’m really encouraged with where we are and how everyone is looking leading up to the regional championships next weekend. This season has gone by so fast, but I believe we still have a lot left to do.”
The Panthers will make their bid for the state championships next week as they compete at the Colorado 2A Region 2 Championships in Delta, Colorado.
