The Rangely Panthers hosted the Western Slope Winter Classic on December 8-9, featuring eight boys’ basketball teams. The Panthers secured a commendable third place with a 2-1 record over the weekend.
The first game was a nail-biter against the Dolores Bears, with Rangely trailing 24-20 at halftime. However, a dominant third quarter, highlighted by exceptional outside shooting, turned the tides in Rangely’s favor. The Panthers triumphed with a 62-48 victory. Notable performances included Landon Bollinger (14 points, 6 rebounds), Lincoln Harris (12 points), and Tristan Scott (11 points, 4 assists).
The Panthers faced off against the eventual tournament champions, the Nucla Mustangs. Despite a strong start, Rangely struggled with Nucla’s fast-paced play and trailed 25-40 at halftime. They adjusted better in the second half but couldn’t close the gap, eventually losing 61-47. Marcos Quintana led the effort with 14 points and eight rebounds, supported by Scott’s 10 points.
In the third-place game against the Dove Creek Bulldogs, Rangely maintained a double-digit lead for most of the match. However, a late-game rally by the Bulldogs brought them within four points. Clutch free throws in the final minute secured a 46-39 victory for Rangely. Clay Allred (9 points, 5 assists) and Chase Cochrane (9 points, key late free throws) were instrumental in the win.
The Panthers now stand at a 2-2 season record and look forward to their next challenge at a tournament in Yuma, Colorado.
