Panthers taking 16 tracksters to state competition

RANGELY | With just one last chance for some athletes to compete, secure a spot at the state championships, or get in a fine tune, the Rangely High School track and field team traveled to Parachute, Colorado, for the Cardinal Invitational.

“This was a really great meet,” said coach Beth Scoggins. “It’s hard to believe that the season has nearly come to a close. The improvements that the kids have made the last few weeks has been so much fun to watch. I’m really proud of each and every one of my kids.”

On the track in the girls’ 100-meter, Emma Smith led the way for the lady Panthers with a time of 14.38, Kaelyn Geer ran 14.89, Aubrey Kenney 16.18, and Miley Francis 16.56. Ashlynn Ducey raced her way to second place in the 200-meter in 27.22, Tylee Fielder ran 29.76 for eighth, Emma Smith 30.02, and Miley Francis 34.56. In the 400-meter Tylee Fielder placed fourth in 1:05.93, Ryann Mergelman ran 1:09.23, and Paytin Kendall 1:12.99. Macy Morgan finished the 800-meter in 3:35.97. The girls’ 4×100 relay ran a great time of 52.91 to place third and the SMR won the meet in 1:56.87.

For the jumps, Annika Cantrell finished second in the high jump with her clearance of 4-11.5 and Paytin Kendall’s 4-01.5 was good enough for sixth. Addison Scott took sixth place in the long jump in 14-05.5, Ashlynn Ducey leapt 14-03.25 for eighth, and Laurie Ward jumped 10-05. In the triple jump, Kaelyn Geer was fourth with a 30-06.75 and Emma Smith took fifth after jumping 30-04.5. Miah Wren won the pole vault after clearing 8-01, Kastyn Dembowski was second with 7-07, and Tylee Fielder was third with 6-01.

Out in the throwing pits, it was Kyrah Phelps leading the way for the lady Panthers with a first place in the discus with a throw of 114-00. MacKenzie Manchester threw 99-09 for third place, Annika Cantrell took secenth with 86-02, Aubrianna Tapia threw 76-11, Chloe Noel 75-01, Miley Francis 70-05, Kastyn Dembowski 69-07, Alivia Green 54-02, and Laurie Ward 50-00. Kyrah Phelps won the shot put as well when she threw 33-05, Aubrianna Tapia took fifth with 30-00, Rylee Allred was sixth with 28-10, and MacKenzie Manchester placed ninth with 27-04.75, Chloe Noel threw 20-04.25, and Alivia Green threw 18-05.

For the boys’ track events, Andrew Dorris was sixth in the 100-meter in 12.20, James Talbot ran 12.84, Robert Murray finished in 12.93, Clay Allred 13.41, and Logan Benson 17.20. Robert Murray ran the 200-meter in 25.37 to finish fourth and Logan Peterson placed 10th in 25.74. Clay Allred was second in the 800-meter in 2:19.36, Gage Nielsen ran 3:07.97, and Matthew Morgan ran 3:11.36. In the 1,600-meter, Gage Nielsen ran 6:44.32 and Matthew Morgan finished in 6:51.69. The boys’ 4×100 relay placed sixth after running 49.93, the 4×200 was second in 1:37.82, and the 4×400 took second place after running 3:34.53.

In the jumps, Logan Peterson leapt 17-06.25 in the long jump to finish sixth, Fisher Winder took seventh after leaping 17-04.25, Robert Murray jumped 13-06.5, and Logan Benson 9-07.25. Gage Nielsen cleared 5-07 in the pole vault to place fifth.

For the throws, Kenyon Cochrane threw the discus 161-03 to place second place, Justin Allred was eighth after throwing 108-05, Chase Cochrane was 10th with 105-01, Malcolm Osborn threw 86-08, Jaren Blankenship 59-04, and Logan Benson 37-08. Kenyon Cochrane was then third in the shot put with a throw of 39-08.5, Chase Cochrane threw 33-09.5, Malcom Osborn 31-05.5, Jaren Blankenship 30-08, and Logan Peterson 15-01.

The Rangely Panthers only have the Colorado State Championships left on their calendars, and only for a select few. Competing this year will be the following: Ashlynn Ducey will run the 200, 400, SMR, and 4×400; Kyrah Phelps will throw the shot put and discus; Miah Wren will pole vault and run the 4×200; Kastyn Dembowski will pole vault; Annika Cantrell will high jump;  Addison Scott will run the SMR, 4×200, 4×400, and compete in the long jump; Aubrianna Tapia will run the SMR and 4×400; Tylee Fielder will run the 4×200 and 4×400; Ryann Mergelman will run the SMR and 4×400; Emma Smith will run the 4×200; Kenyon Cochrane will throw the shot put and discus; James Talbot will run the 1,600, 3,200, 4×400 and 4×800; Andrew Dorris will run the 800, 1,600, 4×400 and 4×800; Justin Allred will run the 4×400 and 4×800; Clay Allred will run the 4×800 and  Anthony Dorris will run the 4×400.
