RANGELY | The Rangely Panthers had another good weekend of basketball last week. On Thursday, the boys traveled to Grand Junction to play the Caprock Academy Eagles. The Panthers had an impressive start, and jumped to a solid lead by pressuring the Eagle’s ball handlers and running the floor. The Panthers were able to extend their lead and coast to a 56-25 win.
Kevin Wren led the team offensively, scoring 14. He was followed by Marstan Wagner with 10 and Fisher Winder who added nine. Saturday, the Debeque Dragons came to Rangely for what would be an exciting matchup. From the jump, the Panthers started hitting shots from beyond the arc. Four different players hit threes in the first quarter, but the Dragons managed to adjust and go into the locker room with the lead at halftime. The third quarter was hard fought but Debeque managed to increase their lead going into the final quarter of the game. Down by eight, the Panthers started their push to close the gap. They chipped away, eventually earning a one-point lead. The Dragons managed a three-point shot late in the game to go up by two points with short time on the clock. After a timeout, the Panther squad executed a play that ended with senior Fisher Winder splashing a three to win the game by one point. At the end, the scoreboard read 50-49. Winder also led the Panthers with 12 points. He was followed by Andrew Dorris and Wren who each contributed 11.
This week the Panthers will travel to Baggs on Friday, and then Caprock Academy will come to Rangely for the Panther’s last regular season home game of the year.
