This past weekend nine Rangely Hurricanes swimmers competed in the Western Slope Championship Meet. Teams from all over the Western Slope come together to compete at this three-day meet.

The meet started early Friday in Glenwood Springs with the 8-and-under swimmers: Emma Dillon, Khloe Skelton and Kai Skelton. All three swimmers kicked the day off with the 25 backstroke. They excelled in this event with Kai bringing home a seventh place finish, Emma bringing home fourth and Khloe bringing home a third place. After a successful start to the meet Emma competed in the 25 butterfly where she finished second. Khloe then competed in the 50 freestyle where she finished third place.
All three girls then competed in the 25 breaststroke, with Kai getting seventh, Khloe getting fifth and Emma second. To finish off the morning of competition the girls competed in the 25 freestyle, a fast and fun event. Kai finished eighth, Khloe sixth and Emma fourth. The girls all swam and competed very well and started off a great weekend with lots of improvement.
On Friday the Hurricanes went to Grand Junction to compete in the Olympic-sized pool at Colorado Mesa University. Rylee Robie and Savannah Skelton competed in this section. Savannah kicked off the competition for the Hurricanes with the 50 butterfly with a time of 1:00.60. After Savannah’s strong performance both girls competed in the 100 breaststroke, where Rylee swam a time of 2:02.75 and Savannah swam a time of 2:02.48. To complete the first day of competition Rylee competed in the 200 backstroke where she finished fifth and clocked a time of 4:01.38.
After a night of rest and relaxation the Rangely Hurricanes showed up Saturday ready for a day full of competition. The Hurricanes had six swimmers competing in the championship. The day started off with a 200 freestyle relay that consisted of Bailey Robie, Emma Dillon, Rylee Robie and Savannah Skelton.
Savannah Skelton and Rylee Robie both competed in the 50 breaststroke where they swam a 57.86 and a 58.43. Emma Dillon, Rylee Robie and Savannah Skelton competed in the 100 freestyle with times of 2:09.03, 1:44.96 and 1:40.78. Karter Skelton competed in the 100 freestyle on the boys’ side, finishing second with a time of 1:27.91.
Bailey Robie, Addi Hejl, Savannah Skelton and Rylee Robie swam in the 100 backstroke, with immense improvements from all of them. Bailey Robie completed the race in 2:31.73, Addi Hejl swam a 2:26.24, Savannah Skelton swam a 1:40.78 and Rylee Robie swam a 1:44.96. Following the strong improvements in the backstroke Karter Skelton used the momentum to compete in the 50 butterfly where he secured a fourth place finish.
To finish off day two of competition the Hurricanes competed in the 50 breaststroke. For the girls, Addi Hejl, Emma Dillon and Bailey Robie swam impressive times of 1:01.25, 1:06.83 and 1:09.54. For the guys Karter Skelton finished in third place with a time of 55.51.
The final day of competition began with the 200 medley relay, which consisted of Khloe Skelton, Addi Hejl, Savannah Skelton and Crimson Wolgamott. The next competition was the 50 backstroke. Rylee Robie and Savannah Skelton competed and swam a 50.73 and a 50.49.
In the 100 breaststroke Emma Dillon swam a time of 2:35.99, Bailey Robie 2:32.80 and Addi Hejl 2:23.63. For the boys, Karter Skelton swam a time of 2:07.45 and took third place.
The Hurricanes had lots of swimmers competing in the 50 free, with all of them making improvements on their time. Bailey Robie swam a time of 1:02.14, Crimson Wolgamott 1:01.26, Addi Hejl 58.77, Emma Dillon 57.50, Khloe Skelton 56.64, Savannah Skelton 43.35 and Rylee Robie 43.33. Karter Skelton also competed in the 50 freestyle where he swam a time of 37.76 and finished in third place.
To finish off a weekend of competition the Hurricanes competed in the 50 backstroke. Bailey Robie swam a time of 1:07.87, Crimson Wolgamott 1:06.44, Addi Hejl 1:06.40, Khloe Skelton 1:05.91 and Emma Dillon 1:02.19. Karter Skelton completed the weekend with a second place finish in the 50 backstroke with a time of 43.85.
The Western Slope Championship was a successful swim meet for the Rangely Hurricanes and the coaches couldn’t be prouder of how hard everyone swam and competed. The Rangely Hurricanes will be competing in Montrose this next weekend where they will once again get to show off their capabilities.
