The Rangely Panthers boys basketball team commenced their season with a challenging away game against the Manila Mustangs on Friday, Dec. 1. The Mustangs set a brisk pace, securing a 22-7 lead in the first quarter, largely thanks to their success with the first four three-pointers.
The youthful Panthers, featuring many players in their first varsity game after the departure of eight seniors last year, struggled initially but gradually adapted to the varsity game’s tempo. Sophomore Lincoln Harris and junior Tristan Scott led the Panthers’ scoring, each with eight points, and junior Marcos Quintana contributing seven points.
Despite a 66-36 defeat, the Panthers, under the guidance of first-year coach Seth Watson and with just one senior, Justin Allred, show promise for the season. They are set to participate in a home tournament, facing the Dolores Bears at 3 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8.
