Special to the HT
MEEKER | Every year, Barone Middle School eighth graders participate in National History Day, a nationwide history competition that develops research, writing skills and oral presentation skills. This year’s theme is “Rights and Responsibilities.” Students spent time in and out of the classroom researching, writing and creating projects ranging from exhibit boards, websites, documentaries and live performances. In January, a team of local volunteers judged their projects, evaluated them and interviewed students about their work. Local judges spent an afternoon with students and helped determine who would move on to the next competition, regionals.
Regionals were held at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction in February. Two high schoolers also competed at the regional competition, Sienna Rolen and Iris Holmes. Barone Middle School students had a fantastic showing and multiple students advanced to the final round of judging for exhibits. At the end of the competition, finalists were announced for the state competition, and Meeker will be bringing nine projects to state.
