Rangely boys basketball had a strong weekend competing in their home tournament. Though the team struggled to play a full game to their potential, they advanced to the tournament championship game defeating Nucla and North Park on Friday. In the championship, the Panthers played Ouray. The Panthers played a slow first half and dug themselves into a 14 point deficit at one point. But, in the second half, the team fought hard to bring themselves back into the game. The team went on a run, stealing the ball and creating multiple turnovers in a row to gain back momentum. In the waning moments of the game, senior guard Kevin Wren stepped up and made a clutch three-pointer to put the Panthers down by one. A quick foul resulted in one made free throw from Ouray which resulted in a two-point lead. In the final seconds, Rangely lost 54-52 with a great shot left bouncing around the rim. The Panthers’ scoring leaders were seniors Andrew Dorris, Marstan Wagner, and Kevin Wren. Marcos Quintana led the team in rebounding, while Wagner and Dalton LeBleu led the team in steals. Overall, the weekend was incredibly positive and the second half of the championship game showed nothing more than all the potential for this basketball season.
