RHS boys golf hosts first home tournament since reinstatement

Special to the HT

RANGELY | The Rangely High School boys golf program celebrated a milestone last week, hosting its first home tournament since being reinstated this year.

For the players, it was a chance to compete on their home course while the school and community rallied behind the event. Strong turnout from parents, local businesses and fans created an electric atmosphere that boosted the team’s energy.

“It was a chance to showcase our players’ hard work and reintroduce golf as a point of pride for Rangely,” head coach Clark Edwards said.

The Panthers finished third overall with a team score of 266, a strong showing for a young team competing against more experienced programs. Edwards credited the team’s resilience and skill while noting the result sets a solid foundation for the rest of the season.

Sophomore Bryson Elam led the way for Rangely with a 77, shooting 41 on the front nine and 36 on the back. He was followed by freshman Gage Prater with an 86, senior Braxton Shaffer at 103, junior Mason Long at 120, and senior Hudson Torsell with a 127.

Looking ahead, Edwards said the team is focused on building consistency, mental toughness and refining technical skills like the short game and putting.

“We want to carry the pride of representing Rangely into every event, building a culture of growth and competitiveness,” Edwards said.

The Panthers will be on the road again starting Friday, Sept. 5, as the team heads to Sterling, followed by a match in Gunnison on Sept. 9. Both events are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
