The Rangely Panther wrestling team had a demanding schedule last week. On Thursday, the team traveled to Silt for duals against Coal Ridge and Steamboat Springs. The Panthers faced a narrow defeat against Coal Ridge, losing 30-27 despite wins from Cameron Preciado, Aydan Christian, Ronny Anderson, Izaiah Moody and Jaxon Torsell. In their second dual against Steamboat Springs, the team put up a strong fight, with Preciado, Christian, Anderson, Landon Carlson and Moody securing victories. However, a controversial decision in the 215 match contributed to their 33-27 loss.
On Friday, the Panthers hosted the Soroco Rams and Glenwood Demons, showcasing renewed energy. Victorious Panthers included Preciado, Christian, Wyatt Stevens, Davon Lucero, Carlson, Moody, and Torsell, leading to a 41-18 win over Soroco. Against 4A Glenwood Springs, the team continued their winning streak, ending with a 36-24 victory.
Saturday marked a significant event for the Panthers as they hosted their first tournament in years, attracting 13 teams, including some with varsity squads. Jaxon Torsell emerged as the champion in the 215 category, with Preciado and Christian as runner-ups. Izaiah Moody delivered an outstanding performance, securing a win in a triple-overtime match and placing fourth. Grand Junction won the tournament, followed by Hayden and Moffat County, with the Panthers placing sixth overall.
Special thanks were extended to Athletic Director Kyle Boydstun for his efforts in reviving the tournament in Rangely, Coach Jay Whaley from Soroco for assistance with track wrestling, and all the tournament workers and parents for their support. The team anticipates making the tournament an annual event.
Looking ahead, the Panthers will face a challenging week with a dual in Duchesne, Utah, on Tuesday, followed by the North Fork duals and the Fight at the Fork tournament on Saturday.
