MEEKER I Thirteen members of the Meeker Community Wrestling Club opened the season with style in Rifle on Saturday as 10 of the grapplers placed in the top four and two returned with extra hardware.
Brothers Liam and Finley Deming finished as consolation champions in their respective age brackets and each one was presented with a sportsmanship trophy, voted on by participating coaches.
“Our kids wrestled well, placing nine in the top three, five of which were champions and I think it says a lot about our kids, bringing home two sportsmanship awards,” coach Carl Padilla said.
Kesston Hobbs entered brackets in both the 10- and 12-under age brackets and won gold medals in each.
Brothers Reed and Ty Goedert also won gold medals as did Ridge Williams, who went up an age division to win an individual championship.
Ryan Phelan and Dillon Hobbs finished second in their brackets while Adrian Carabantes won a bronze medal. Domonic Wyatt placed fourth, while Parker Pontine, Damon Dade and Trentin Moomey all wrestled in the first tournament of the season, but did not place.
Several MCWC members will wrestle in Moffat County on Saturday.
