The Meeker Board of Education had a walk-through of the construction progress at the high school and bus barn before the regular board meeting.
Superintendent Chris Selle said the coming weeks will see a spike in expenditures for the construction projects, which is expected. “It’s the most critical time period coming up on our schedule.”
Currently, the project is on time and on budget. Safety protocols are in place on the project to address COVID-19.
Administrators said distance learning is starting to see a “decline in enthusiasm.”
“There’s less engagement from students, more frustration from parents. I think that was to be expected. It’s been challenging, but I still think we’re in better shape than a lot of other school districts,” Selle said.
A decline in participation and enthusiasm is normal for this time of year, but may be exacerbated by distance learning.
Some teachers have implemented small group work, either via computer or in person at the elementary school for invitation-only meetings.
“This isn’t the ideal way to do school but we’re figuring it out,” said Meeker High School Principal Amy Chinn.
The Meeker district school year is set to end on May 21.
While getting through this year is the current focus, Selle is keeping an eye on what’s ahead. “The deficit is budgeted and we’ve been keeping reserves for a rainy day. It’s about to rain just as hard as it ever has for school finance.”
Asked about what happens in a few months when the next school year is set to start, Selle said, “We’re really trying to finish up this school year right now.”
