MEEKER | SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is a federal initiative dedicated to combating hunger and food insecurity. This program provides vital nutrition benefits to eligible individuals and families through an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, functioning much like a debit card at authorized grocery stores and farmers’ markets throughout the state, including right here in Meeker. These benefits are specifically intended for purchasing food items such as fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, and bread, with strict limitations on non-food purchases like alcohol, tobacco, and household supplies.
SNAP is a lifeline for hard-working Coloradans. Over 60% of SNAP supports families with children. SNAP also serves older individuals and adults who are unemployed or underemployed. SNAP provides needed food to our community members and neighbors.
The positive impacts of SNAP extend far beyond the individual households it serves in Colorado. When families have consistent access to nutritious food, we see improvements in community well-being. For Colorado’s children, this can mean better overall health, a reduced risk of developmental issues, improved concentration in school, and ultimately, a stronger foundation for academic achievement and future opportunities.
Economically, every dollar invested in SNAP generates roughly $1.50 in local economic activity. This means that SNAP not only helps put food on the tables of Coloradans but also provides crucial support to local businesses, from the independent grocer down the street to the farmers selling fresh produce at the market. This spending sustains jobs and strengthens the overall economic health of our communities.
Eligibility for SNAP in Colorado is determined by several factors, including income and household size. For example, if you are an individual making $2,510 (before taxes) a month, you qualify. If you’re a family of four and you make $5,200 (before taxes) a month, you qualify.
