The Cowboys opened their season last Saturday with a home double header against Palisade.
“Our softball girls fought hard against 4A Palisade on Saturday but did not come away with the W’s,” commented head coach Kendal Bergman.
Game one went 0-11 and game two 6-20, with only three seniors on the team, the Cowboys are young.
“These games were great experiences for our relatively young team and we learned a ton that will only make us better from here on out,” said Bergman.
Pitching this week was Reagan Hafey, Brea Garcia, and in her high school debut Addie Knowles who took the mound in game two. Hafey and Garcia split game one, then Garcia took the mound for another 69 throws in game two, throwing over 120 pitches for the day.
“All three pitchers gave great opening performances for the season with Reagan Hafey (Sr) starting the first game, Brea Garcia (Sr) finishing the first game and starting the second game, and freshman Addie Knowles pitching the second half of the first game,” commented Bergman. “We were able to zero in on each of the pitchers’ strengths to better prepare us for our next game against Rifle on Thursday”.
The bats got going in game two with two each by Garcia and Ryann Mergelman and then one each from Knowles and Hafey.
“The batting lineup struggled the first game but started to come alive during the second game with solid hits from Reagan Hafey and Ryann Mergelman along with newcomers Miah Wren and Jade Miller,” said Bergman.
“The score does not reflect our skill level but rather first game jitters,” said Bergman.
Senior Garcia said that “Palisade was tough, but I think it was a good learning experience for our young team. There is a bunch of potential and we are all working super hard to have another successful season!”
This week the team has one game each for varsity and JV, both in Rifle, beginning at 3:30 p.m. for varsity.
