MEEKER | The Food Bank of Meeker, Colorado began in the 1980’s in the Methodist Church and has been functioning continuously through these last 45 years. Their mission statement states: “The Food Bank of Meeker, Colorado exists to serve the vulnerable and financially challenged households in our community with food, kindness and hope. Realizing a debilitating crisis can happen to anyone, we are prepared to fill the gap so that no one goes hungry and everyone knows they matter. Our goal is to be a beacon of hope in the midst of some of life’s disruptions.”
Food Bank of the Rockies has been helping communities through their food programs since 1978.Their mission statement is similar: ‘Our mission is to ignite the power of community to nourish people facing food insecurity. We show up for anyone experiencing hunger knowing that food insecurity can impact any of us at various points throughout our lives. The circumstances of the people we support may be different, but we never waver from our mission of nourishing our community members in need of food.’
Starting this week, the local Food Bank of Meeker welcomes Food Bank of the Rockies to Meeker to help reach a special goal. Andrea Dean, an alumni of the Boettcher Foundation Scholarship Program, explains: “For Hunger Action Month and the Boettcher Service Summit, I’m hosting a community food drive in Meeker! Food insecurity is at a 10-year high and on the Western Slope, 1 in 7 people face hunger. The Food Bank of the Rockies’ Western Slope Distribution Center—serving 13 counties—continues to see the greatest need of all its branches. Our goal as an organization is to have 1,490 pounds of food donated across the state of Colorado and beyond, all organized by current or previous Boettcher Scholars!”
The food drive runs through Oct. 4. Drop off Locations are Watt’s, PMC, all three Meeker schools, Meeker Christian Church, and Streamline Realty. All shelf stable/non-perishable items are accepted, so long as they are not damaged, expired, or packaged in glass. Andrea concludes, “I can’t wait to show the state how tiny but mighty our town of Meeker is!”
