MEEKER | Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is an amazing diverse student organization that incorporates skills from the Family and Consumer Classroom into competition pieces.
For the past eight years Meeker has been working towards placing all competitors in a Gold or Silver category.
This year, instructor Brenda Hummel and her group of students did just that. Ten out of 13 competitors also placed in the top three in their respective categories. Six students have qualified by taking first or second place and will advance to Seattle, Washington, in June for the National Competition.
Along with their competitive pieces, Sam Hightower was awarded the 2024 Outstanding Student of the Year. This award is given to one student who demonstrated great potential in supporting the mission of FCCLA through their leadership in chapter, community and/or district.
Hummel was recognized as the 2024 Outstanding Adviser. This award recognizes the advisor promoting FCCLA, operating an integrated chapter with a balanced program of work, and facilitating youth-centered activities.
“I was very surprised,” Hummel said. “I love Family and Consumer Science Education. FCCLA lends itself to showing the knowledge my students are getting. Having students place well demonstrates that we are doing things well- and students are learning what our standards demand. I love seeing them take their knowledge, apply it and become successful in competition.”
Meeker High School’s FCCLA group placed 10 of 13 students in the top three in their respective categories and six qualified for the national competition in Seattle, Washington, this June.
