MEEKER — Two teams finished the annual Cowboy Kickoff Classic golf tournament with an eight-under-par 60 but only one team was willing to participate in the playoff to determine the winner.
Eighteen holes was enough for Chad Luce, Bill Devergie, and Keith and Sue Dunbar; who tied with Lex Collins, Andy Coryell, Ethan Overton and Anthony “Bubba” Mazzola. Luce, Devergie, and the Dunbars elected not to playoff, crowning Collins and his team the champions.
The annual tournament, which raises money for the football program, featured nine teams in last Saturday’s tournament.
“We really appreciate all our sponsors and support from the community,” head football coach Shane Phelan said. “I think everyone had fun.”
Part of the fun started on the first hole, where players had to use a baseball bat to tee-off. On No. 3, the only par-five on the course, teams had to tee-off using a little kid’s driver and use a hockey stick to putt on No. 7 and again on the same holes on the back nine.
The football team started practicing Aug. 11 and Phelan is excited about the upcoming season.
“We would like to have more kids but we have a nice bunch of upperclassmen,” Phelan said. “There is a lot of enthusiasm on the team and they are excited to get going. We’ve seen a lot of good things out of the fellows.”
