Tough weekend for Meeker volleyball team

MEEKER I Last weekend was a tough one for the Lady Cowboys.
This weekend will be, too.
“This weekend will be another tough one for us. We play Rangely Friday and Vail Mountain Saturday,” said Meeker volleyball coach Christy Atwood. “Rangely is playing great ball and will be a tough match for us, and Vail Mountain is always unpredictable.”
Despite last weekend’s losses to Paonia and North Park, the Lady Cowboys were in both matches the whole way.
“The girls battled hard, despite the flu bug running through the team,” Atwood said. “We have all the right tools necessary to win. We are just having trouble putting them together at the right time.”
Against Paonia last Friday, Meeker lost in three sets, 20-25, 14-25, 10-25.
Next was North Park on Saturday.
“That wasn’t a league game, but a measuring stick,” Atwood said. “The girls played with an aggression I had not seen this season.”
In the first two sets, Meeker split 25-16 and 8-25. The third set was close.
“We battled point for point to win the third set, 26-24,” Atwood said. “We were close in the fourth set, allowing a four-point run mid set we couldn’t recover from, forcing a fifth set. Errors killed us in the fifth set. When you spot a team five points in the rally, it is very difficult to overcome and even worse when we only play to 15.”
