Town of Meeker meeting update from May 7

MEEKER |  Town Manager Mandi Etheridge explained more about the water easement approval process for properties near Shaman Trail Drive, highlighting that properties outside of town boundaries require extraterritorial water agreements to apply for water taps.

Recent easements and related approvals were necessary for new waterline installations, which will provide increased water pressure needed for fire suppression in the airport’s new private hangars. It was noted that fire suppression water is not metered or charged for like domestic water use.

Etheridge’s official report to the board detailed public works projects, including planned street repairs to be delayed until 2025 due to unexpected cost estimate increases and related budget constraints. She also discussed the successful testing of a replica cannon for the Fourth of July parade. Ultimately the cannon was deemed too loud for downtown use. She also highlighted the adoption of a new digital procurement system to streamline bid submissions and updated the board on mosquito control efforts, including ongoing field surveys, volunteer recruitment, and aerial spraying. Etheridge noted Callie Scritchfield as the point person for mosquito control.

The board dedicated a portion of the meeting to discussing the community wildfire plan. The draft of the plan, developed with input from various agencies including the Forest Service and BLM can be viewed at rbc.us/457/Emergency-Management) Board members stressed the importance of thoroughly reviewing the plan to identify any target areas that need attention before final submission.

The plan’s renewal is necessary for the community to be eligible for significant funding opportunities aimed at wildfire prevention and infrastructure improvements.

Urban renewal projects in Craig were discussed by board members, specifically the rapid construction of 20 new apartment units. This project, funded through various grants, was completed with pre-manufactured units assembled on-site. The board expressed interest in exploring similar approaches for Meeker to address local housing shortages. This discussion revisited prior conversations on leveraging external funding opportunities and adopting innovative solutions for housing shortage challenges.
