More than 40 boys and girls from Meeker High School are on the track team this year and most of them competed in Delta last Saturday to open the season.
“We had a great start of the season,” said head coach Kris Casey. Casey is assisted this year by John Strate, Kristen Henderson and volunteer assistant and former head coach Andy Goettel.
“We were very proud of everyone’s performances and many kids posted times or distances close to where they were at the end of last season,” Casey stated.
The girls finished in the middle, tied for ninth in a field of 18 teams, which featured several 3A and 4A teams. The boys placed 11th out of 18.
Meeker junior Kathryn Doll led the team with two first-place finishes, winning the long jump with a leap of 16-3 3/4 and the triple jump with a hop, skip and jump of 33-8 1/2. Doll also finished third in the 100-meter dash, with a time of 13.3 seconds and seventh in the 200 dash, with 27.87.
Alema Atoafa had the highest-place finish for the boys, placing third in the long jump with 19-7 1/2 and a fourth place finish in the 4×200-meter relay with teammates Toby Casias, J.C. Henderson, Jared Frantz and Jake Nieslanik.
Casias placed fifth in the 100 dash with 11.47 and Frantz was sixth in the 400 dash, with a time of 53.3.
Meeker senior Ryan Wix finished seventh in the discus throw, with 115-7 and eighth in the shot put with 41-8 3/4. Ohana Mataia placed sixth for the girls in the discus throw with 85. Nieslanik ran the 200 dash in 24.12 for an eighth place finish.
Adrienne Wix, Katie Morgan, Brayden Bastian and Aly Ridings made up the 4×100-meter relay and placed 10th, as did the 4×400 relay with Mariah Jensen, Morgan, Liz Fellows and Anna George.
“We are looking forward to a great season,” Casey said.
