Trustees approve trail funding, review town projects

MEEKER | The Meeker Board of Trustees approved a letter of support for a regional nuclear energy initiative and committed funding to local trail improvements during its latest meeting.

Trustees voted unanimously to support a regional response to a Request for Information (RFI) from the U.S. Department of Energy seeking input from states capable of supporting a full nuclear energy lifecycle. The proposal, presented by consultant Matt Solomon, aims to position western and southern Colorado within a broader regional effort as federal agencies consider future investments.

Solomon said participation is critical to maintaining “a seat at the table” as decisions are made. He noted a limited response from the state could leave gaps in representation, while a coordinated regional submission may improve the area’s chances of being included in future planning and investment discussions. He also referenced potential long-term economic impacts, including significant job creation, though no specific projects are proposed.

The letter of support does not commit the town to any specific project or facility, but signals interest in participating in future discussions. Trustees approved the measure ahead of an April 1 submission deadline.

In other business, the board approved a $5,000 contribution to the Meeker Area Mountain Biking Association (MAMBA) to support a Colorado Parks and Wildlife grant project. The organization was awarded more than $112,000 in grant funding for trail improvements but must secure matching funds.

MAMBA representatives said project costs have increased since the original estimate, but work is moving forward with the help of volunteers. The grant is limited to federal lands near Meeker, and the additional funding will help close the gap needed to complete planned improvements.

During staff reports, Public Works reported pumping more than 8.6 million gallons of water in February and ongoing maintenance and infrastructure work, including street repairs and system improvements.

The Meeker Police Department handled 214 calls for service in February, resulting in four arrests and 10 citations. Officers are also conducting traffic speed studies in the area of Third and Main streets.

Trustees also discussed vehicle needs for the department, including use of already budgeted funds for a future school resource officer vehicle, as an existing spare vehicle has experienced mechanical issues. No formal action was required.

Community Development reported ongoing wildfire mitigation efforts, including training and planning for an upcoming workshop, as well as continued distribution of relocation guides to local employers and real estate agents.

The meeting also included a public announcement of a planned drone show during this year’s Meeker Classic sheepdog trials as part of Colorado’s 150th anniversary celebration.
