RBC I The single-dose flu shots given to most veterans by the Grand Junction VA Medical Center and its satellite clinics are preservative free and contain no Thimerosal preservative.
The VA Medical Center has used nearly two thirds of this year’s shipment and hopes to give the remaining 3,000 shots before year’s end, said nurse Cindy Dearden, flu shot coordinator. “These shots are free to veterans and do not contain a live virus.”
The multi-dose flu vaccine, reserved for patients with latex allergies, does contain trace amounts of Thimerosal. Veterans with a latex allergy should tell staff prior to getting the flu shot so nurses can take special precautions. For details on the flu vaccine visit www.cdc.gov/flu.
