WHERE’S THE BEEF?

On Dec. 20-21, 2023, the Rio Blanco Cattlewomen sponsored a beef cook-off for two classes of catering students. The students used sirloin steak provided through a grant from the Colorado Beef Council for their delicious recipes. Each participant received a beef stick and a custom-designed tumbler made by Brenda at Craft Shack Creations. Judges Iris Franklin, Diane Ewing and Macy Collins had the difficult task of choosing first- and second-place teams from each of the two classes, who received gift certificates to Watt’s Ranch Market.

Winners from the first class were Morgan Keetch, Brooklyn Metzger, Kai Sjoerdsma and Christyn Murray. They made marinated sirloin with mashed potatoes, Brussels sprouts with bacon and garlic bread. Second place on day one was a stir fry with sesame rice made by Ella Slaugh, Angel Allen, Abbi Schwartz and Brynna Tafoya.

On the second day, Eduardo Cordova, Ellie Hossack, Celine Lozano and Callie Stout served sliced sirloin with cauliflower, potatoes and green beans for first place. Second place was Shyanna Kurth and Lilly Blakley with garlic butter sirloin bites with Brussels sprouts and mac and cheese. According to the judges, all the recipes were very tasty. Of course, how could you go wrong with delicious beef as the main dish!
