At the Meeker School District board meeting on Nov. 27, members of the White River Conservation District (WRCD) recognized sixth-grade students from Barone Middle School for a poster-designing competition.
The students were tasked with designing a poster promoting water conservation. The Colorado Association Water District determined the theme of “one water” — the idea that everyone shares the same water supply on earth.
“We were happy to see the kids so interested,” Kathy Nelson, vice president of WRCD said.
The posters went up for display at Streamline Realty, and members of the public voted to select the best poster. They voted for Addilyne Shonk’s poster. Gael Rodriguez took second place, and Charlee Bennett took third. The three students received cash prizes: $100, $75 and $50 respectively.
In addition, Shonk and Rodriguez will go to the state convention, where registered attendees will vote virtually for the best poster.
The remainder of the top 10 students included Kelsee Barrios, Breneli Ruiz, Uriah Padilla, Graysie Coryell, Tyler Follman, Lucy Miller and Isaiah Gianinetti.
“I am very excited for this to continue,” said Claudia Bullen, sixth-grade science instructor. Bullen found that the competition fit in well with the current unit about weather and the water cycle.
