RANGELY I A May graduate from Colorado Northwestern Community College took the top pilot award at the recent National Intercollegiate Flight Association (NIFA) Region I Safety Competition.
Marcus Kindall beat out the rest of the competition, including Air Force cadets, for top individual honors. Kindall graduated from CNCC in May with a degree in aviation technology.
As a team, CNCC placed third in the region and will advance to the national competition in Columbus, Ohio, in May.
Other teams in the region were from Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico. The team from the U.S. Air Force Academy placed first, and Metro State College of Denver placed second.
The CNCC team placed second in flight events. Special recognition went to freshman Torbyn Cabral, who placed second in the pre-flight competition, beating out commercial pilots and seniors from four-year schools.
“Again, we have proven how special a program we have here in Rangely,” said Jason Herkimer, aviation program director. “This win is as much a victory for the town of Rangely and CNCC as it is for this program and the members of this team.”
