Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago
– If Theodore Roosevelt doesn’t want to run for president, why does he keep insisting so often and so publicly that he doesn’t?
– From the Yampa Leader: “Occasionally one will hear the remark, ‘I wish I was out of this town!’ and then one feels like saying, ‘I wish you were!’ for the man who stands on the street corners chewing and spitting, telling obscene stories, cursing the town, finding fault with his grandmother because she was a woman, claiming that the merchants are a lot of thieves, that the doctors and newspaper men would skin a man to a finish, and a whole lot more, is a nuisance and an abomination.”
– The Herald suggested that the town authorities remove the sun dial from River Front to the town park. It was done.
– As unusual and, it is expected, enjoyable social event will be the Leap Year ball to be given Thursday evening, Jan. 4. The usual order of things will be reversed.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
– The Stage Coach Inn west of Meeker will have a big New Year’s dance again this year, but it will be held on Saturday night, Dec. 23. State law prohibits cocktail lounges to remain open after 8 p.m. on Sundays.
– Dr. Willis Scott tells us that he is planning a matinee show at the Rio Theatre on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 24. The show will be “Tammy Tell Me True” starring Sandra Lee.
– Dear Santa: Please bring me a building block and panel set with a motor. With love, David W. Smith.
– Dear Santa: How is Mrs. Santa? I want five talking puppets, and I want Fred and Wilma Flintstone, and I want Barney and Betty Rebel and Dino, too. With love, Mike Crawford.

The Meeker Herald — 25 years ago
– Carl Moomey, son of Gerry and Goldia Moomey of Meeker, and Kelly Rae Ballinger were united in marriage Saturday, Nov. 22 in Elko, Nev.
– Peggy and Howard Kilduff are the parents of a new son, James Austin Kilduff, born Dec. 17 at Pioneers Hospital.
– MHS freshman wrestler J.C. Watt picked up some valuable experience as he won three matches and lost two at the 24-team Warrior Classic. Matt Jensen and Justin Seely earned titles to give Meeker runner-up honors.

– Be sure to enjoy Dick and Meryl Dean’s lights, Ben and Connie Gianinetti’s, Keith and Jana Whitaker’s, Mike and Mary Washburn’s, Jim and Theresa Ellis’ and Jack and Una Raley’s.

Rangely Times — 45 years ago
– Rangely’s town council held a four-hour session Monday night, winding up the year’s activities for the town.
– We hear that Continental Oil Company has plans to drill 20 more gas wells in the Douglas Creek-Dragon Trail area in 1967.
– From the editor’s desk: “When man is on the threshold of nearly a half-million mile round trip to the moon, one should conjure the woman traveling 65 miles on the back of a donkey made the most significant trip of all time.”
Rangely Times — 35 years ago
– A $100 reward is being offered by the Town of Rangely for information leading to the arrest and conviction of person or persons destroying stop signs and trees.
– Ice skating will again be available in the former Hildenbrandt Park even though the Town has lost it in a court settlement as a future park site.
– Christmas is one of the busiest days of the year for Mountain Bell, and the company is already preparing for the annual avalanche of long distance calls.

Rangely Times — 25 years ago
– We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Mark Wilczek for having an outstanding weekend. First, for winning the prestigious Warrior Classic wrestling tournament in Grand Junction and for making the 1986 All-State Denver Post football team.
– Third-graders Scott Dembowski, Jenny Tipton and Kelli Foxley were the third, second and first place winners, respectively, in the Christmas Spelling Bee.
– One-inch of rain contains the same amount of water as a 10-inch snowstorm.
