Historical Society enjoys successful Range Call

The Rio Blanco County Historical Society’s booth on the county courthouse lawn in Meeker on Thursday was a sweeping success as the group sold its popular root beer floats during and after the Fourth of July parade. The society was also busy during the rest of Range Call with the re-enactment of the Oct. 13, 1896, bank robbery in downtown Meeker and the tours of the Milk Creek Battle Site. The group also kept the White River Museum open for locals and out-of-town visitors.

RBC I The Rio Blanco County Historical Society had a very busy Range Call celebration, helping wrap up the 128th edition of the Fourth of July in Meeker.
Beginning with the parade, the historic stagecoach housed in the museum was pulled by a beautiful team of horses. Davey Smith has been responsible for the stagecoach and portions of the pageant for more than 20 years.
He didn’t have a team last year to pull the parade marshals, but he promised Dick and Merle Dean Moyer he would get them a ride. He did just that this year as they were the honorary senior members of the historical society. RBCHS President Ellene Meece and her husband, David, joined the Moyers inside the coach, and board member Hallie Blunt and her son, Connor, were atop the stage for the ride. During the parade and afternoon festivities, members of the society sold their famous root beer floats and bank robbery T-shirts.
The annual re-enactment of the bank robbery was once again well attended. There is a constant appeal to the history and excitement of an actual bank robbery, especially when the perpetrators were stopped by the combined efforts of armed community members.
After a busy Thursday, the group geared up for a educational and scenic tour of Milk Creek Battle Field on Saturday. Behind the leadership and perseverance of historical society board member Joe Sullivan, the site has become a must-see for historians and tourists in the area.
The historical society’s weekend of events was made possible by the energetic coordination of the board president, the tireless volunteers and the tremendous history of the area.
