MEEKER I Sporting the theme of “Leadership and Legacy,” the week of Feb. 17-20 was History Project Week at Barone Middle School.

Teacher Kris Casey said, “All the eighth graders participated in the history (competition) and worked incredibly hard. (Fellow teacher) Jason Browning and I are incredibly proud of all the kids and the effort they put into their history displays.
“We also want to thank our volunteer judges, who spent two afternoons judging the projects and helping to determine which students and which projects will move on to the regional competition to be held at Colorado Mesa University on Saturday.”
At the regional competition, the students will compete against sixth-, seventh- and eighth- grade projects from across the Western Slope.
Categories of regional competition are: group and individual poster exhibits; documentaries; and websites. The top three groups and individuals in each of the three display types are eligible to move on to the regional event. Twenty-three students qualified.
The winners, their categories and subject matter are:
Group Exhibits: Eli Hanks, Andy Kracht and Brayden Woodward—“Leaders in the American Revolution.”
Gavyn Garr, Brennan Jensen and Stephen Walsh—“1966 Texas Western University NCAA Championship.”
Krissie Luce and Lila Klinglesmith—“Florence Nightingale.”
Group Exhibits Honorable Mention: Luis Villalpando and Victor Arias—“Pancho Villa.”
Kassie Luce, Charlie Day and Gracie Bradfield—“Anne Boleyn.”

Group Documentary: Briar Meszaros and Pake Burke—“The United Nations.”

Although they will not be moving on to regionals, Adrian Carabantes, Mariah Archuleta and Jacob Slone received special awards for their research, using book sources beyond total reliance on the Internet, and choosing an especially challenging topic.
The volunteer judges were: Alicia Watt, Jody Meakins, Jim Brown, Brooke Mantle, Mary Washburn, Coleen Patterson, Carole Rowlee, Steve Wix and Mandi Etheridge.
