JV comes up short 20-22

Meeker freshman Raul Lopez returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown in a JV game Meeker lost to Hayden Monday in Starbuck Stadium. Lopez also scored on a 2-yard run and a kick return and threw for Meeker’s only score in the varsity game in Monte Vista.

MEEKER I The Meeker JV team came up just a yard short of the end zone, going for two points after scoring a touchdown on their last series of plays. Meeker had taken a two touchdown lead in the first half, only to see Hayden score three touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters.Meeker got on the board early when Raul Lopez took an option pitch from QB Dylan Mobley. Lopez went 24 yards for the score. Lopez returned a 75 yard interception for the second Cowboy and an 8-0 lead. The Cowboys missed the extra point which would prove to be big later in the game. The offensive line worked wonders creating large holes and the Cowboys continued to move the football but penalties and fumbles slowed their progress. The offensive line aided the quick lead of the black and gold. Justin Giao, big Jake Roland, Matt Frantz, Ruben Roybal, Anthony Watt at center, and Luis Samarripa proved to be effective in the first half. Receivers and outside blockers such as Tristin Pelloni, Aaron Cochran, Levi Dinwiddie, et cetera, helped to open the running lanes for the Cowboys.Raul Lopez scored on a kick return late in the fourth quarter but the extra point failed and the Cowboys suffered a loss.Matt Frantz made a good catch on a Dylan pass to keep the hope alive only to see time catch up to the Cowboys.Anthony Watt did an exceptional job at offensive center. The defense was led by Justin Giao, Dylan Mobley and Raul Lopez. JC Henderson was the workhorse, running the football 18 times from his fullback position for 40 yards.
