Lady Cowboys defeat Aspen in Glenwood Springs tourney

MEEKER I Early in the season, coaches are looking for not only wins, of course, but improvement by players.
Meeker High School volleyball coach Christy Atwood got both from her team last weekend at Glenwood Springs.
The Lady Cowboys won one match, beating Aspen on Saturday, and lost three, but Atwood liked what she saw from the defending league and district champions.
“I’m happy with what I saw and how we progressed,” said the Meeker coach. “I was really excited with the play from our seniors. We’re just trying to figure ourselves out. We played well as a team. We’re still getting used to each other. That’s what’s great about a preseason tournament.”
After losing a close match to the host team Friday, RHS also lost matches Saturday to Nucla and Grand Junction.
“It was great competition,” Atwood said. “That’s what I like to start the season. You can, I guess, pad your preseason and get wins, or you can put ’em up against tough competition. Then, when it comes down to when you need to win an important match later in the season, you’ve already played at that level.”
Meeker will play Aspen again today in its first home match of the season. In the last meeting, the Lady Cowboys won the first game, lost the second, and came back to win the third and final game.
“It will be good for us,” Atwood said. “We played them well. Hopefully we can step it up and play at that level again.”
