Meeker baseball team victorious at home but falls prey on road

With Meeker shortstop Hunter Garcia backing him up, second-baseman Trapper Merrifield caught the throw from catcher Ty Gibson and prepares to put the tag on a Roaring Fork baserunner. The Cowboys beat the Rams 14-4 in the first home game of the season played in Paintbrush Park on April 7. The Cowboys’ next home game is April 21, against the Grand Valley Cardinals.

MEEKER I The Meeker varsity and junior varsity baseball teams have played several games the past two weeks, including two at home and two against the No. 1-ranked team in the state, with another tough doubleheader scheduled for Friday in Hotchkiss.

The varsity game against the 3A Roaring Fork Rams was called after five innings, when Meeker led 14-4.
“Hunter Garcia and Doak Mantle pitched for the win, with great defense from the rest of the Cowboys,” Meeker head coach Brian Merrifield said. “We had 11 hits and only one error.”
Garcia also led the team at the plate, getting three hits. Mantle, Ty Gibson and Logan Hughes each had two hits against the Rams.
After a day’s rest, the Cowboys traveled to Paonia to play a doubleheader against the No. 1-ranked Eagles. Coach Merrifield said Meeker started well but got into trouble late, losing 10-0 in the first game and 11-1 in the second.
“In game one, with Logan throwing a gem, we were behind 1-0 into the fifth inning, when we ran into trouble,” coach Merrifield said. “We played eight games in nine days, with the varsity going 3-3 and the JV going 3-0. We are playing really good baseball right now.”
The Cowboys will play a doubleheader against the No. 4-ranked Bulldogs in Hotchkiss on Friday, with the first game starting at 11 a.m.
