MEEKER — Congratul-ations to all the participants at county fair for jobs well done. Now that the fair is over, it’s time to start looking ahead to the start of the new school year! School starts Aug. 25, less than two weeks from today.
Important events in history on Aug. 14: 14 Japan surrendered, ending World War II, in 1945. Less important, but interesting nonetheless, the whiffle ball was patented on this day in 1953.
From a fun e-mail titled, “You know you’re from Colorado when … You go anywhere else on the planet and the air feels ‘sticky’ and you notice the sky is no longer blue. Everybody wears jeans to church. You’ve gone off-roading in a vehicle that was never intended for such activities. You always know the elevation of where you are. You think that May is a totally normal month for a blizzard. You grew up planning your Halloween costumes around your coat. You have no accent at all, but can hear other people’s. And then you make fun of them. ‘Humid’ is anything over 25 percent. Your sense of direction is based on ‘toward the mountains or away from the mountains.’”
