MEEKER I Colorado Parks and Wildlife District Wildlife Manager Jon Wangnild of Meeker died in a horseback riding accident in June 2013, and the Meeker Sportsman’s Club will hold its second annual non-competitive Jon Wangnild Memorial Shoot Sunday, July 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Meeker Sportsman’s Club property south of Meeker on Highway 13, about 2.2 miles south of the intersection of highways 13 and 64.
The event will feature free shooting of archery, black powder rifles, .22 rifles, 20 gauge shotguns and pistols.
During his 14 years of service, Wangnild taught children of all ages about wildlife, conservation and having respect for the traditions and ethics of hunting.
The Meeker Sportsman’s Club voted in 2013 to change the name of the annual Range Call shooting event to the Jon Wangnild Memorial Shoot.
The event is not a competition.
“This is an opportunity for new or seasoned shooters (firearms as well as archery) of all ages and both sexes to come to the range and practice with different styles of firearms and bows,” said Troy Osborn, president of the club for the inaugural shoot last year.
“People should expect to have competent and profession coaches available to help them learn something new,” Osborn said.
All bows and arrows and ammunition will be provided and all firearms will already be on site.
Anyone can participate, and there will be guns to fit nearly any size of person.
Those under 18 years of age must have a parent sign a waiver.
