MEEKER | All ages are invited to celebrate National Public Lands Day on Saturday, Sept. 22 by volunteering on the local trails above Meeker with the BLM and ERBM Recreation and Park District.
Those looking for an easy to moderate volunteer opportunity are encouraged to join the Sage Hills Trail crew that will meet at 9 a.m. at the Sanderson Hills Park shelter. Volunteers will restore a short section of “two-track” trail to a single track trail what will match the rest of the trail system and reduce long-term trail maintenance. This involves hiking less than one mile round trip, carrying and scattering woody debris, spreading native seed and installing trail drainage with shovels.
Those looking for a moderate to difficult volunteer opportunity will be part of the Hidden Valley Trail crew. This volunteer opportunity will meet at Sanderson Hills Park shelter at 8 a.m. and will put the final touches on the newly constructed trail. This hike incorporates 5-6 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1,000 feet. Once on the Hidden Valley Trail, participants will spread native seed on cut banks, trim brush, and tidy up the trail tread with rakes.
The BLM will provide trail tools and cloth work gloves for both of these volunteer opportunities. Volunteers are asked to bring water, sunscreen, sunglasses and are to wear sturdy shoes. Lunch will be served to volunteers by ERBM from 12-2 p.m. All participants will receive a 2018 NPLD T-shirt.
