Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
• No sign of a break in the weather and still no snow.
• “Dear Santa: Please bring me some tennis shoes. Is it cold at the North Pole? Love, Joe Conrado.”
• “Dear Santa: Will you bring me some cowboys and Indians. Merry Christmas to you from Richie Parr.”
• Three high school girls received typing awards: Judy Brown, Doris Janes and Janet Rollman.
• At the junior high, on Monday, Dec. 7, students viewed the Christmas story “The Savior Is Born.”

The Meeker Herald — 20 years ago
• Sandy Bradfield was Meeker’s second big lottery winner since the inception of the game as she scratched off a winning $5,000 ticket.
• County’s $10.5 million budget points to problems in the future. Rio Blanco County is spending over a million dollars a year above what they’re taking in. To offset this, taxes would have to go up almost 35 percent.
• Old man winter firmly entrenched himself this past week as snow and cold temperatures were the norm rather than the exception. The nighttime temperatures plunged below zero while the daytime saw the the thermometer warm up only slightly above freezing.

The Rangely Times — 50 years ago
• The new Rangely area office building for Moon Lake Electric location on Main Street will be dedicated Saturday.
• The original plan for a two-story junior high has been scrapped after a meeting of the Rangely school board.
• Miss Lorabelle Durner of Greeley has been employed to teach an additional first grade section and has begun her duties here.
• The Harlem Stars will meet a Rangely All-Star basketball team in the high school gym Saturday night.
• At the Rig Theatre: “Attack of the 50 ft. Woman,” “Nothing So Big as the Giant Behemoth,” “The Legend of Tom Dooley,” starring Michael Landon; and “The Three Stooges” in their first full length feature film, “Have Rocket, Will Travel.”

• Dr. Robert Mullen was named the interim superintendent of the Re-4 school district by a unanimous action of the board.
• Heather Stanley and Glendon Berrett were the RMS students-of-the-month for November 1989.
• Rio Blanco County was in search of a county planner and a budget director.
• For sale: Commodore 64 personal computer complete with everything! Plus 48 disks.
• Fourteen students were named to the Who’s Who Among American High School Students for 1988-89: Melissa Chaney, Bryan Conkle, Cindy Conkle, Andrew Crookston, Curina Davis, Phoebe Day, Gail Dollahite, Judy Edelen, Jason Hoyt, Michelle Palmer, Mylea Petersburg, Elizabeth Schofield, Scott Strain and Candy Wall.
