Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 75 years ago
March 7, 1935
• Everett Rector, Rangely pioneer, was severely burned when carbide gas from his lighting system exploded. It seems that after retiring for night, Mr. Rector thought he smelled a gas odor. When he struck a match there was an explosion.
• Dance, March 9 at I.O.O.F Hall. Sponsored by band mothers and for the benefit of Meeker School bands.
• At the Princess Theatre: Have a Heart starring Jean Parker, James Dunn, Una Merkel and Stuart Erwin.
• An airplane headed north towards Craig flew over town on Wednesday of this week. While it is not unusual in summer time, few fly this route in the winter.

March 3, 1960
• The Tom Murray Market celebrated its third birthday this week.
• March came in like a lion after a stormy February. Guy Stealey from the Pot Hole valley in the Marvine district reports that they had 46 inches of snow in February.
• Johnnie Wix was over from Craig on Tuesday of this week attending to business at the Meeker office of the Northwest Credit Bureau. While here he visited with relatives and friends.
• Pat Sheridan and Jerry Seely each went to the state finals in their weight classes and both picked up second places.

• Oil shale test center discussion focuses on financing alternatives.
• McInnis backs bill that targets undesirable plants, weeds.
• The community was invited to attend the LynMar grand opening March 8. Governor Roy Romer was expected to be in attendance for the event.
• Meeker’s 5-10 year old martial arts class swept their division at a recent tourney in Craig. Brian Watson, Jimmie Huffman, Garrett Kiser, Dustin Brown and Scott Garcia competed.
• MHS girls basketball: Amy Joy, Pegge Halandras, Martha Taylor, Jennifer Phelan, Denise Jordan, Andie Brauch, Erin Tucker, Karrin Borchard, Kelsie Anderson, Carol Lynn Whiteman, Heather Merriam and Beth Ann Jones.
• MHS boys basketball: Ricky Dodds, Ed Rubin, T. Vance Watt, Matt Monson, Don Jones, Luke Conwell, Rowdy Atwood, Kyle Whitaker, Chad Rodriquez, Tom Kitchen and Chris Hoff.

March 3, 1960
• Twenty-four dog licenses have been purchased this year. At an estimated figure of one canine in Rangely for every five persons, we should assume that there are only 120 people in town.
• Rangely’s freshman basketball team turned in peak performances here Saturday to win three hard games and take the championship trophy of the second Invitational Tournament.
• The boy was taking his girl out for dinner. She suggested a plush restaurant, and when they got there, the boy almost keeled over when he saw the prices. He thought quickly and said, “What will you have, my plump little doll?”

• At the Rangely Chamber of Commerce meeting, secretary Lisa Eckerdt addressed the need for a calculator for the COC office.
• Merrill Millett resigned his position as general manager of Moon Lake Electric Association after 10 years.
• At Bestway: Ragu spaghetti sauce, 75 cents; and Betty Crocker “snakin” cake, 99 cents.

• Accountability to taxpayers assured by McInnis’ special-district bill.
• The county hired a new planner, Jim Komatinsky from Baltimore, Maryland.
• Cub Scounts Trent Foxley and Robbie Morgan received the highest rank in the Cub Scouting program, the Arrow of Light.
• Colleen Bonds was crowned Theta Zeta Sweetheart Queen of 1990 at the annual March of Dimes Sweetheart Ball at the Elks Lodge.
