The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago
• Enterprising Al Strehlke of the City Drug Store held his annual ice cream and fountain opening Saturday, and in spite of unfavorable weather it was a pronounced success.
• Contractor Joy has completed the broad cement sidewalk in front of the Meeker Hotel and First National Bank buildings.
• This valley will soon have plenty of fruit-bearing trees. L.B. Walbridge planted 50 apple trees on his mesa ranch, and the Hamilton Bros. (his neighbors) set out 200 apple and other fruit trees. This is the way to make the country look like a white man’s.
• Lem Miller is now wearing a dignified air behind the clerk’s desk at the Meeker and calling out, “Front, show this gentleman up to No. 23.”

• Unofficial census numbers show county population up — Meeker down. Meeker population 1,627. Rangely 1,460. County total at 5,060.
• Sides Rexall Drug store is this week announcing another of their popular One Cent Sales.
• Poison operations to control ground squirrels and prairie dogs were started by the County this month.
• Two big test explosions set for Rifle shale beds.
• $59.95 for a Hoover Constellation vacuum cleaner at Meeker Hardware, Bud and Esme Conrado, owners.

• Sharon Day and Bryce Purkey were honored as “Man and Woman of the Year” by the Meeker Chamber of Commerce.
• The Meeker School Board accepted resignations from MHS Athletic Director Bill Turner, and teachers Jamye Amick, Dawn Odwalt and Jeannie Jones.
• Best of Show winners in the MHS art festival were Chris Alberti and Heather Merriam.
• Born Monday, April 30, 1990: Clare Elizabeth Balloga, to Steve and Cindy Balloga. Born Saturday, April 28, 1990 at Pioneers Hospital, Hannah Grace Fitzgibbons to Keith and Cindy Fitzgibbons.

The Rangely Times — 50 years ago
• Rangely census up over 80 percent since 1950. Final population figure for 1960 was 1460.
• At the Rig Theatre: “The Flying Fontaines,” “1001 Arabian Nights,” James Garner and Natalie Wood in “Cash McCall,” and Olivia deHavilland and Dirk Bogarde in “Libel.”
• Senior spotlight on Trudy Ann Huber, Robert Edgar Lanam, and Barbara Joe Carmickle.
• The Rangely Women’s Hopscotch team was disbanded last week, coach Carlsbad announced. The girls, it seems, had lost their hop because of too much scotch.

• The newly completed petroleum/instrumentation building on the CNCC campus was dedicated to Ira William Cramer, longtime Rangely resident.
• The Rangely Town Council held a four hour executive session.
• At Bestway: Frito-Lay Doritos, 85 cents. Western Family 5-pack frozen bread dough, $1.35. Post 15 oz. Raisin Bran cereal, 99 cents.
• “55 miles per hour, it’s not just a good idea — it’s the law.”

• Television and motion picture star Dennis Weaver to speak at CNCC commencement.
• Corey Hafey and Helen Bader were named outstanding male and female students at CNCC by Dr. James Ross.
• Colorado FBLA elected Geri Ann Gunderson as secretary.
• The ice is off Kenney Reservoir now.
