Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago
The taxpayers held their meeting Tuesday and named the following ticket: mayor, Rube Reynolds; trustees, J.M. Hulett, J.E. Rooney and Al Bills.
Mr. and Mrs. F.E. Sheridan have reached Los Angeles, and Mrs. S. Is already showing signs of improvement in health as a result of the change to sea level.
The weather has been on the combination order all week, mild March blizzards, spring-like, thawing, cold, hail, rain, cloudy and some snow, but in the main pleasant compared to that which prevailed east of the Range.
Mud! And more mud!
The high school has received another needed adjunct to its equipment – a piano.
“Jack the Kodak Man” is now boarding at Sheriff Ellison’s more or less popular hotel, having returned from Rifle Thursday at the invitation of Mr. Ellison. “Jack” left here Tuesday, leaving a good sized bill at the Davitt house unpaid, also other accounts, hence his return to our beautiful city.

The deadline for filing nominations for the coming town election closed this past week and only one nomination was made for mayor and there have been seven nominated for councilmen with six to be elected.
As the 50th anniversary of the building of the Holy Family Catholic Church gets underway, members of the parish have been working for the past month to offer the public a dinner and St. Patrick’s Ball of the era when families of the whole community came from miles around after a long winter to visit and dance the night away.
Tuesday of next week, March 20 will mark the first anniversary of the opening of the Walbridge Wing of Pioneers Hospital; Meeker’s senior citizen home.
Much above normal preciptation throughout Western Colorado is the report of the U.S. Geological survey.

Ever since it was built, Meeker’s swimming pool has been a subject of considerable controversy. Since 1981, the pool has been the unwanted child of the town.
The highlight of Tuesday’s town meeting was the awarding of contracts for the 1987 downtown development project and the 1987 Sulphur Creek drainage project.
The second major Meeker business to close its doors within the past two months did so last Friday as D&S Sentry Hardware announced they were closing, due to “poor health and poor economy.”
Meeker area Girl Scouts released balloons last Thursday as part of their celebration to mark the 75th anniversary of Girl Scouting.
The Bowling Brats league were given their trophies and patches at a dessert party at Kilowatt Korner last Friday. High average scores: Corinne Fey and Grant Unrein.

Rangely Times — 45 years ago
The organizational meeting of a “Community Action for Beauty” campaign was held Monday night at the Reddy Room of Eddy’s Restaurant with over 20 in attendance.
The Rio Blanco County spelling contest is scheduled April 7. The best speller among seventh and eighth graders will represent the county in the state bee on April 29 in Denver.
Gov. John A. Love will be host at a lunchion meeting in Denver March 28 for a discussion of the proposed nuiclear test shots in western Colorado and their possible impact on the state’s economy.
One good thing can be said for kleptomania: if you’ve got it, you can always take something for it.
We haven’t heard very many wild tales about the earthquake on Feb. 14 which was felt by Rangely residents about 8:30 p.m. In fact, no one called the Times to report anything unusual that day.

The Mad Mixers met Monday at 4 p.m. at Mrs. Moore’s house.
Charles Cady and Judy Steele are the February students of the month for Rangely Middle School.

Cast members of “Bye, Bye Birdie” at Rangely High School: Debi Pearson, Nick Lancaster, Scott Lindsay, Jarrod McDonald, Billie Jo Smithey, Cindy Conkle, Elaine Brenton, Jackie Wysocki and Laura Norlin.
Honey has been used as a center for golf balls and in antifreeze mixtures.
The Rangely District Hospital is pleased to announce the arrival of a new diagnostic service, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.
Peggy Rector is in Washington, D.C., this week attending the county commissioners convention. She will have several news items to share with us upon her return.
To many old timers this should come as no surprise that this was a mild winter. The average for December, January and February was five degrees above average and wetter than nearly twice the winters we’ve had.
